Here’s a cheap-o Knock Off!

There’s a great site out there called Knock Off Decor. (If for some reason the link doesn’t work, just google it.)  Anyway, there are tons of really cool things on there that are such great knock-offs (look-a-likes) of high end items! It always reminds me that the minds of people are so creative and all it takes is a little  inspiration sometimes…and not wanting to always pay the higher prices :-)

Well, I haven’t seen anything lately that I wanted to copy/knock-off except for something really simple I’m showing you today. My hubby is always telling me in good fun, “You’re such a cheap date!”  You’ll see in a minute how he can say this with quite a lot of truth :-)

For my birthday several months ago, our son and daughter-in-law sent me this terrific kitchen set of Williams-Sonoma hand lotion and hand soap. I got all excited about them when we visited a WS store in Omaha last year. And being the thoughtful people they are (and very observant too!) they knew this is something I wanted so they gave it as a gift. The pretty pink color inspired me to use little touches of pink accents in our white kitchen. And I love the fragrance too!

(click on all photos to see them close up for details)

So as we approach Fall, I plan to switch out the soft pink accents for either some golden yellowy-orange and/or reds.  I’ll put the pink soap and lotion away for the season.  I thought about ordering some Williams-Sonoma hand soap/lotion online in Sicilian Orange (pretty light orange color)or finding something locally that would work….probably not as pricey but just as nice…like maybe a Caldrea soap/lotion that I can get at Target.

Well today we stopped at Big Lots (discount store) and I just happened to find this little hand soap/lotion set for $4.50 with the little holder.  (WS soap/lotion was on sale for $29.95 + shipping online so this was a great steal for me!)  The thing is, it had really ugly labels on it that made it look super-cheap! I was more interested in the fragrance (Mandarine orange) and the color. Both are very nice! So I went to the computer and copied the Williams Sonoma labels as closely as possible. Talk about a knock off! This was fun and now I’m already with my kitchen soap/lotion when it’s time to bring out the fall decor!

Here are my knock off lotion/soap labels.

Yup! I guess hubby’s right! I really am a cheap date :-) Something like these labels, the little attention to details in a home’s accessories, can make a simple thing go from ordinary to pretty cool and it cost nothing but a little of my time!

What a great idea. I love that you put your name on it. How did you make the label? You said you copied it, but how did you do it?

    • I just kept the original label beside the computer and looked for/experimented with fonts in a Word document until I found the ones that look as close as possible to the ones they have. Then I translated the English to French words for the same places Williams Sonoma labels had them. Used borders similar too. It takes a little while, but then I saved the document so that if my labels get ruined from water or whatever, I’ll just print them again. I printed them on white card stock. I thought using our name was kinda cute too :-)

  2. [...] it’s the little details that make a big difference. Connie from Connie Nikiforoff Designs purchased an inexpensive lotion set at Big Lots. The color, scent, and price were all perfect. The [...]

  3. How cool! How did you adhere the labels to the bottles?

    • I attached the labels with two-sided tape…the plain old stuff of office supply stores ;-) Later on, I decided to cover the entire label in clear packing tape to avoid having them ruined so quickly with water. But I liked the look without the packing tape better ;-)

  4. What a great idea! I never would have thought about using card stock and double-sided tape.

  5. Would you consider posting a template for these labels?

    • I’ll see if I can find my original Word document and then post it. Finding “matching” fonts was pretty easy…getting the spacing right was a little more work to fit it on the label ;-)

How do you keep the labels from getting yucky with the water/soap drips?

  7. This is great! Thanks for sharing….

    • You’re welcome Stephanie O. :-) One person on the Knock Off Decor site said it was a waste of time and money. I prefer to think of it as spending time doing something simple, fun, inexpensive and easy for anyone to copy…if they want ;-) Glad you liked it!

  8. I think this is a great idea and I’d love to copy it! If you make the template for it please let me know…. (and it sure isn’t a waste of time… don’t listen to the negative comments!)

    • @ Susan…I’m going to see if I can do a template thingey ;-) And as for negative comments: My hubby says “Well with those, at least you know its real!” Haha!

Would so love that template too. What a great idea!!!

      • To those of you who asked about a template for the labels: I used Microsoft Word to do them. And my sister (who’s waaaaaay more savvy than I am about this computer stuff!) discovered I used some rather “unusual” ways of creating my labels. Essentially, I did some of it “wrong” so I can’t really send you a template :-( And on top of that, the dimensions of my label may or may not fit your bottle. My suggestion is to play around with the functions of Word (such as using lines, text boxes, various fonts you have on your computer, etc.) to get the look of the label you’re trying to copy/knock-off. I may be offering creative services at a later date from things you see on my blog/website. Check back ;-)

  9. [...] body wash?  Will it really matter? {wink}  Or you could always make your own labels like I did here.   I do this cuz I want to…but if you find it a waste of time, nobody says ya gotta do it [...]

  10. You could laminate the labels for longer durability.
So cute! Great idea! Wishing for a template. :o )

    • I’ve had several people ask about a template. Unfortunately the way I did mine on Word doesn’t make it easy to reproduce it as a template. Sorry :-( Actually, eventually for durability I just used wide clear packing tape to cover the labels…A cheap-o form of laminating ;-)

  11. Many, many years ago — in the 1970s, before computers even! — the safety committee at my company put adhesive labels on the trucks of safe drivers. Back then waterproof labels weren’t heard of — or at least not easy to come by — so we sprayed them with clear Krylon paint and it made them very waterproof. This might work on your labels.

    • That’s a great idea! Actually what I eventually did to “waterproof” them was to cover them with clear packing tape. That way I could remove them if I wanted to. I guess I use what I have on hand :-)

  12. Yup! Whatever works for ya :-)

So cute! It really is the little things that make all the difference. What font(s)did you use?

    • The fonts I used were ANDALUS for the main font, BOW for the French script/words and GAUTAMI for the contents amount font. They were as close to the Williams-Sonoma fonts as I could get ;-) I put them into a Word document so I can change it whenever necessary…like if I change the kind of dish soap or whatever.
